Real Artist

Besides singing and dancing, one of K-bao's other favorite activities is painting. Over the summer we've had a few occasions to let the girls hang out for an afternoon on the patio and let loose with the brushes.

"I'm a real artist," K-bao likes to say dramatically, while painting big, bold strokes on the page, and pouring various unrelated colors together to create new hues.

When the girls are together painting, there's never a quiet moment of reflection or concentration. It's a never ending stream of chatter. queries, bantering.

"Did you see this color I mixed?" "Can you please not take that pink?" "No, you need to clean your brush first!" "Look at this purple flower!" "I'll trade you this brown for that yellow alright?" "This is very abstract." (Yes, K-Pop really heard that word being thrown around a few times).

Young Author

K-bao has advanced significantly as both a reader and writer recently, and indeed has started penning her own little booklets.

Last weekend she decided to write - and illustrate - her first book, admittedly constructed by putting eight or nine staples to two sheets of paper. Subjects ranged from astute observations ("My family is nice") to statements about her own feelings ("I was mad because I got sick") to pronouncements of universal truths ("Love is kind").

In her second book, written shortly thereafter, she invited K-Pop to co-author (but not to co-illustrate - clearly she has formed her own quite accurate opinions already on K-Pop's artistic capabilities).

For Dad

K-Pop walked in the door tonight after a whirlwind business trip and was handed the below piece of art by little K-bao.

K-Pop learned that K-bao had drawn and written the above on her own initiative and by herself, with only a little bit of help from Xiao Ah-Yi (Aunt Christina) on the spelling of "Happy Birthday." What a delightful Welcome Home and Happy Birthday gift!

Drawing

In her first instance (of what will undoubtedly be many more instances) of inflicting damage to the condo we just moved into, K-bao practiced her letters on the wall with a big blue marker. With a 3-year-old's sixth sense that this was not going to be an approved activity, she at least made her marks in her closet and not on the walls of her room.

Being it was her first infraction of this sort, and we hadn't specifically said that she is not to write on the walls, she got away with a stern talking-to.

However, clearly it wasn't quite stern enough because as we were trying futilely to wipe the marker away, she ran around piping "Don't forget the other one! There's more behind you!"

Here's one side of the wall:

Here's the other side - after 10 minutes of scrubbing (and yes, she's recently learned her A's, V's and W's):

Modern Art

Below is a clip of K-bao at the canvas. We call her style "Vigorous Impressionism." As you can see, she takes a rather forceful approach with her strokes. At least we know that lack of boldness in execution of artistic vision won't be one of the criticisms of her work.

#TimeFlies

January 1, 2021! How time flies. K-bao's growth from a spunky little kid to a rambunctious tween is one of the most tangible markers of ...
